Event - EuroGentest Gender meeting ’sex and gender issues and genetics’

Based on the original project description EuroGentest launched a distinct project on ‘gender and genetics’ in which sex and gender considerations in relation to genetic testing are analyzed in a broader perspective. A workshop taking place in Leuven on 23 September is the key element of this activity.

The workshop will aim to answer three questions:

• What is the state of the art in integrating sex and gender issues in research (methodologies) in relation to this field and to genetic testing?
  -> What do we know? Which gaps in knowledge can be identified that deserve further research?
• What is the state of the art in integrating sex and gender aspects in the practice ?
  -> What do we know ? Which gaps in knowledge deserve further research ?
• What are the implications ? Which tools are needed to promote better integration of sex and gender aspects in the field of genetic testing?

During the seminar, the most relevant topics are introduced based on a literature analysis or based on experience /on-going research. Each presentation will last 15-20 minutes. Results are discussed with the purpose to come to conclusions on the three questions above.

Topics to be covered are grouped into 4 main categories:

• Sex and genetics research
• Gender and genetic counseling
• Sex, gender and ethical decision-making
• Education and the profession
