P5 David Barton is Chief Scientist at the National Centre for Medical Genetics in Dublin, Ireland, and Honorary Lecturer in Molecular Genetics at University College Dublin. Having trained in Trinity College Dublin and The Queen’s University of Belfast, he carried out medical genetics research at Yale University and Cambridge University, where he first became involved in diagnostic genetics. He set up the NHS molecular genetics diagnostic laboratory in Cambridge in 1988 and then his current laboratory at the National Centre for Medical Genetics in 1995. David Barton has been involved in work to monitor and improve the quality of genetic testing for many years, working with UK NEQAS, EMQN and now EuroGentest. He was co-ordinator of the CRMGEN project, developing certified reference materials for genetic testing. David Barton has published over 85 papers in peer-reviewed journals on many aspects of the molecular genetics of inherited disorders. |
