P12 Brian Fowler is head of the laboratories for routine clinical chemistry and for diagnosis of inherited metabolic disorders as well as undertaking teaching duties including lectures, tutorials and supervision of Ph. D. students. His research focuses on metabolic and molecular aspects of homocysteine disorders in health and disease concentrating on vitamin responsive forms of the genetic defects as well as regulatory aspects of homocysteine metabolism. The University Children's Hospital Basel, Metabolic Unit is one of the five centers in Switzerland responsible for clinical management and diagnosis of inherited metabolic diseases. The unit is an international reference center for disorders of homocysteine and related vitamins and also biotin disorders. It is part of the university department of pediatrics with links to other major specialties including endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, nephrology, neurology, and oncology as well as medical genetics.
