P18 Joerg Schmidtke is a medical geneticist, Director of the Institute of Human Genetics, Hannover Medical School, Chair of Human Genetics. His research has focused on molecular evolution, the molecular genetics of inherited disease, and the structure and ethics of genetic service provision. He was co-chairman of the Human Gene Mapping DNA-Committee and Genome Data Base Editor (1988-1991), chairman of the German Board of Medical Genetics (1993-1997), member of the ethics and public relations committee of the German Society of Human Genetics (since 1996), member of the Board of the European Society of Human Genetics (1997-2002), member of the ESHG Public and Professional Policy Committee (since 1997), president of the German Society of Human Genetics (1998-2000), member of the ethics council of the German Federal Ministry of Health (1999-2002), and coordinator of ORPHANET Germany (since 2002). He has served as a counselor to the German Medical Association in issuing guidelines on genetic screening, gene therapy, prenatal diagnosis, and predictive genetic testing. He participated in several EU projects including CAGSE, PrimGen, EUROGAPPP, and GenEd.
