The 25th April 2008 will be the first European DNA day. This was the day of the publication in Nature 1953 (171:737-8) of the Watson and Crick model of the double helix; 50 years later, the (near) completed sequencing of the human genome was published (on 14 April 2003).
To commemorate these two dates, the ASHG begun an educational initiative, the so-called DNA day, in 2003. The European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) decided to join in this year. The Education Committee of the ESHG launched a DNA Day Essay contest among high-school students.
