QAu database: how to use the search engine

IT-requirements

Browser compatibility

This search engine uses standard web technologies such as XHTML, CSS and JavaScript. We directly support the following browsers:

Other browsers are not officially supported, but the search engine will probably work with any recent browser.

Screen resolution

A minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels is required.

Javascript

These web pages use Javascript to check user inputs and improve usability. It is not required for the basic functionality of the search engine, but is not recommended to be turned off. Any recent browser should have JavaScript enabled by default.

How to use the search engine

To search for a laboratory:

Searching Fields

The search engine looks by default in the following fields:

Filtering your search

You can limit your results by using any of the filters below the input box.

Initially the search engine searches on the fields listed above; but you can limit this to search for example on a disease, a contact person, EUGT number, laboratory or institution name.

You can also filter according to quality criteria. You can check one or more options.

Keywords

A keyword can be a word, part of a word or a sentence. If a sentence is entered it will try to match the entire sentence. So searching for 'Genetics unit' will only bring back labs that have 'Genetics unit' in their name and not 'Unit genetics'.

Case sensitivity

The search engine is case insensitive. This means keywords like Genetics and GENETICS, will bring back exactly the same results.

Wildcards

The search engine automatically puts wildcards in front of and at the end of each keyword or sentence. This ensures searching for e.g. Londo, will bring back all laboratories in London.

Sorting the Search results

By default, results are sorted by quality assurance criteria. These are ordered according to the following criteria:

  1. Accreditation
  2. Participation in EQA
  3. Licensing

The criteria are additive, so that for example labs which are accredited and participate in EQA appear before labs which are accredited but participate in no genetics EQA schemes.

The QAu criteria are identified by the symbols:

The solid symbols imply data that has been fully validated by EUGT (See: How the validation was done).

Results can be sorted in other ways, by selecting the headings:

Laboratory details page (only available for registered users)

When you enter the details page for a laboratory you get several blocks of information.
